Our History

The Outer Banks is an Area with a Unique and Exciting History

Virginia Dare was the first settler of English descent to be born on American soil in 1587 on Roanoke Island. There are terrifying stories of pirates and shipwrecks in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”. And, just a few miles down the road from Duck Woods, Wilbur and Orville Wright took their historic first flight in 1903.

Duck Woods Country Club began in the mid-1960’s under the original name of the Outer Banks Recreation Association and Duck Woods Golf Course. The original 250+ acres of maritime forest, nestled within the heart of Southern Shores, was donated by the Kitty Hawk Land Company in 1964. Only through the diligent and enthusiastic energies of a small group of local residents did the dream of providing a golf course and recreational facility on the Outer Banks become a reality.

In May 1967, construction contracts were awarded to build the golf course designed by famed golf architect Ellis Maples and play began on June 8, 1969.

In 1988, a new set of by-laws was adopted which formally changed the name to Duck Woods Country Club. In 2005, we reached another milestone with the grand opening of our spectacular new clubhouse. Duck Woods Country Club will continue to provide the finest amenities and offerings to enhance the lives of our Members and our guests.
