The Women’s Association of Duck Woods Country Club Memorial Scholarship 2012 is now open to applications through April 1. If you are looking for a scholarship to help someone in need of continue their college education, this is a great opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history of the scholarship?  The first WADWCC scholarship was awarded in June 2002 in memory of WADWCC member and leader Judy McCarthy whose life was taken suddenly in a tragic automobile accident. At the time, the award was designated the “Judy McCarthy Scholarship for Returning Women.” Criteria required the recipient be a woman who had experience a lapse of studies due to demands of family or work.

In early 2008, the scholarship name was changed to WADWCC Memorial Scholarship and opened to both male and female applicants.

What is the purpose of the scholarship today? Awarded annually, the scholarship honors the memory of all deceased members, recognizes the importance of education and life-long learning and supports the organization’s commitment to help needy members of the local community.

Intended to assist a student whose post-secondary education has been interrupted or delayed, the scholarship is designed to aid recipients who are seriously pursuing an associates or bachelor’s degree.

Members of DWCC or their children are not eligible for the scholarship.

What does a scholarship cover? Up to $2,000 will be awarded by the program to cover tuition, books and other education-related expenses.

How many students have received the scholarship? Since its inception in June 2002, 10 area students have been awarded this scholarship.

What are the requirements to apply? To apply, an applicant must: 1) be a high school graduate, who does not have a bachelor’s degree, 2) have completed one year of work/home experience and/or post-secondary study, 3) be a resident of Dare County or Currituck County, 4) be a U.S. citizen/eligible for U.S. citizenship and 5) enroll in a minimum of one course in the fall 2012 semester. Students may enroll at any accredited non-profit college or university on campus or on-line.

What is the application process? Interested applicants must submit, by April 1, 2012: 1) a completed application, 2) an official high school transcript, 3) an official transcript of any completed post-secondary course work, 4) a resume of work experience including dates of employment and 5) include contact information for two references (not relatives).  Completed forms and required documents are to be sent to:

Submissions will be reviewed by the selection committee and finalists will be contacted for an interview during May 2012.
